For those who don’t know who Willie Nelson is, he is an American country music singer and songwriter who also doubles up as an actor, poet, author and activist. His prominence came after he released the critically acclaimed album titled Shotgun Willie in 1973, which was followed two years later by another smash, Red Headed Stranger, and later Stardust in 1978. These three albums propelled him to the country’s list of the most recognized artists. Nelson has played a big part on the big screen, having appeared in over 30 films and co-authored several books, not to mention his activism for the use of biofuels and legalization of marijuana.
Marijuana. In the year 1980, Nelson performed on the south lawn of the White House. This was during Jimmy Carter’s reign and the First Lady, Rosalynn Carter, joined Nelson in a duet of the track ‘Up Against the Wall Redneck Mother’ by Ray Wylie Hubbard. According to his biography, Nelson wrote that he was a frequent visitor to the White House, where he smoked weed on the roof of the White House.
