It defied genetics. The incident was brought to light on the Maury Povich Show, a second of its nature. It involved a woman who came on the show to prove her ex-boyfriend was indeed the father of her twins. However, to everyone’s disbelief, the supposedly father of the twins fathered just one of them. The host was also shocked by the revelation, admitting that he didn’t even think it was possible.
Fast-forward a couple of years to 2008 and a similar case appears on the show once again. This time round, it involved 19-year old Alejandrina, mother of twins Jayla and Julius. She was claiming that one Jose was the father of the two, but a paternity test proved otherwise after Jose refused to believe he was the father calling Alejandrina a ‘party girl’ who slept around and a ‘whore’. This time round, Povich was familiar with such cases. He had this to say:
“I want to explain about this situation. It’s happened before on this show with fraternal twins. Less than one per cent of fraternal twins are from different fathers, to be accurate 0.001 per cent of the time and this is one of those less than one per cent.”
So rare is this occurrence that only a few cases have been documented in medical records. When twins are conceived by different fathers, this phenomenon is called heteropaternal superfecundation. It occurs when two or more of a woman’s ova get fertilized by different men within the same ovulation cycle.
